Some experiences are not meant to show landscapes, but to reveal meaning.
The Ancestral Caravan is one of those rare encounters — an exclusive Atacama Connection experience, created to connect you with the living essence of Atacama through its people, its animals, and the natural rhythm of the territory.
The experience takes place just outside San Pedro de Atacama, about 15 kilometers from the village.
There, you are welcomed by an Atacameña shepherd — a guardian of knowledge passed down through generations — who receives us alongside her llamas.
At the beginning, she introduces the experience with calm and simplicity, explaining how to walk with the animals.
Each participant is paired with a llama, guided by a rope. The animal responds to rhythm, presence, and attention — a learning that unfolds naturally, step by step.
The walk itself is gentle and unhurried.
As we move through the open desert, she shares stories about the role of llamas in Atacameño culture — how these animals shaped life in the desert, enabled transport, food, exchange between communities, and ultimately human presence in such an extreme environment.
She also speaks about the present — how they live today, how traditions are preserved, and the challenges they face.
What emerges is not a rehearsed presentation, but a genuine exchange — a living lesson shaped by words, silence, textures, and movement.
Departing around 9:00 AM, before the sun becomes stronger.
The soft morning light, the fresh air, and the quietness of the desert create the ideal atmosphere for walking and listening.
At the end of the day, when the desert begins to change color.
Walking with the llamas as the sun approaches the horizon turns the experience into something even more sensory, culminating in a deep and silent sunset.
In both options, the experience operates with a minimum of 2 participants, always in private or semi-private format, with small groups.
At the end of the walk, we prepare an Atacama Connection table — a moment of pause, sharing, and closure, designed to respect the natural rhythm of the place.
As this experience is built in partnership with the local community, confirmation is made in advance, ideally at least 15 days prior, ensuring respect for the people involved and the dynamics of the territory.
The Ancestral Caravan is not for those looking for speed or quick photos.
It is for those who wish to understand Atacama from within — walking alongside those who have always belonged to this land.
This experience exists to connect you with the essence of Atacama — not as a spectator, but as part of the landscape, even if only for a few hours.
