Some experiences in Atacama are not about intensity — but about balance.
The Atacama Salt Flat + Wine Experience in Toconao is an exclusive Atacama Connection experience that connects two complementary moments: the vast stillness of the salt flat and a carefully crafted pause in one of the region’s most traditional villages.
We leave San Pedro de Atacama heading south, moving from oasis into open desert. Gradually, vegetation disappears, and the landscape becomes flat, white, and seemingly endless.
We arrive at the Atacama Salt Flat, the largest in Chile.
Here, the horizon feels infinite.
The salt crust, shaped over thousands of years by intense evaporation, forms irregular textures beneath your feet. The ground crackles, the air is dry, and silence naturally takes over.
And even in this extreme environment, life is present.
Flamingos are a constant part of the landscape.
They feed and thrive here, and their delicate presence contrasts with the surrounding aridity. This is not a rare sight — it is an essential part of the ecosystem.
The experience is guided with time — to walk, observe, and understand the scale of the salt flat, rather than simply passing through it.
We then continue to Toconao, a small Andean village that preserves its identity, architecture, and rhythm.
Built from volcanic liparite stone, the village feels simple, grounded, and authentic.
It is here that the experience deepens.
The wine served does not come from elsewhere — it is born here.
The grapes are cultivated in an ancestral grove, a true oasis within the desert, where water allows life to exist against all odds.
The wine is produced locally by families who have dedicated generations to this craft, maintaining a small-scale, artisanal production deeply connected to the land.
We prepare an outdoor tasting, where the wine becomes more than a drink — it becomes context.
Each glass carries the contrast between the harsh desert and the rare fertility of this oasis.
With each sip, time slows down.
This is not just about tasting wine.
It is about understanding where it comes from — and what it represents.
We return to San Pedro de Atacama with the feeling of having experienced two distinct expressions of the desert — the silent vastness of the salt flat and the subtle richness of a pause rooted in place.
