It is the wrong airport for anyone planning to explore the Atacama Desert from San Pedro de Atacama because it serves the city of Copiapó, which is also the wrong destination for this itinerary.

It is important to understand that flying to Copiapó instead of Calama is far more than a minor detour. Arriving at the wrong airport can disrupt transfers, bookings, tours, your travel budget and, consequently, your entire schedule from the very moment you land.

So the rule is simple: to reach San Pedro de Atacama, fly into Calama (CJC). This one detail prevents a whole series of problems.

The second point is just as important: before choosing your desert tours, understand that traveling to the Atacama requires some precautions that are different from those involved in a conventional trip.

Travel health insurance, altitude, acclimatization and suitable clothing should all be part of your plans before you leave Brazil.

We’ve listed below 8 things you should know before traveling to the Atacama Desert.

1. The correct airport for San Pedro de Atacama is Calama (CJC)

Yes, we are repeating this so that you remember just how important it is. The confusion arises because Chile has:

the Atacama Region (Chile’s regions are equivalent to states or provinces around the world);

the Atacama Desert;

an airport called Desierto de Atacama in Copiapó (CPO).

Despite the similar names, however, these are different geographical references, located in different regions and separated by considerable distances.

San Pedro de Atacama, the main tourism hub for exploring the desert, is located in the Antofagasta Region. That is why we are emphasizing this point so strongly: the search for “Atacama” or “Atacama Desert” when buying your plane tickets can mislead you to the wrong destination.

So, to remove any sign of doubt, here is one final reminder:

Calama, El Loa Airport (CJC): correct.

Copiapó, Desierto de Atacama Airport (CPO): wrong.

For travelers coming from other countries, flights commonly connect in Santiago (SCL) before the domestic leg to Calama. Available routes may vary depending on your city of departure, airline and time of year. If in doubt, always check if the final destination shown on your ticket is CJC, El Loa Airport in Calama.

It is also important to note that El Loa Airport is approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from San Pedro de Atacama, and the overland journey along Route 23 takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Bear in mind that there is another leg ahead and plan accordingly: use the restroom, buy some snacks and make any other preparations you may need.

To make your journey easier and more comfortable, Atacama Connection offers transfers from El Loa Airport to your accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama. This means you can land in Calama without having to worry about how to reach your hotel.

2. Do not travel to the Atacama without travel health insurance

Once you’ve sorted out your ticket and the correct airport, there is another common mistake to avoid: traveling without health insurance.

Chile does not provide free medical care to foreign tourists. Any need for treatment could therefore result in unexpected expenses. In the Atacama Desert, this precaution is even more important.

Some tours take place far from major urban centers and can reach elevations above 4,000 meters. Before purchasing travel insurance, check that the coverage is suitable for the activities you plan to do.

Standard tours, trekking and high-altitude adventures such as Cerro Toco and Láscar Volcano may be subject to different conditions depending on the policy you purchase.

The essential point is simple: remember to arrange health insurance before traveling. Remembering it only after a problem arises can be very unpleasant (and expensive).

Travel health insurance is part of pre-trip planning. So, do it accordingly.

3. Do not underestimate the altitude of the Atacama Desert

The third mistake happens often after landing: trying to see everything too quickly. El Loa Airport is 2,326 meters above sea level, while San Pedro de Atacama sits at an elevation of approximately 2,450 meters.

In other words, travelers may begin to feel the effects of altitude as soon as they arrive, especially those coming from cities close to sea level. Altitude sickness is real (and very uncomfortable), but taking the right precautions can help reduce its effects.

The Atacama also has one of the most arid climates on the planet. Maintaining proper hydration is therefore one of the most important precautions from your first moments in the desert. Drinking water supports your well-being during the acclimatization period from the outset and helps your body cope with the low humidity.

Hydration does not speed up the physiological process of acclimatizing to altitude, but it does help prevent dehydration, which can intensify discomfort and produce symptoms very similar to altitude sickness. That is why drinking water from the moment you arrive is so important.

For this reason, Atacama Connection provides passengers with water on arrival and during the transfer between Calama and San Pedro de Atacama. It is a simple gesture, but one that makes a real difference on a trip where adjustment, hydration and a sensible pace all need to be taken seriously.

4. Acclimatization should determine the order of your tours

As mentioned earlier, San Pedro de Atacama is around 2,450 meters above sea level. Many attractions visited from the town, however, are located at much higher elevations. Building an itinerary based only on how close destinations are, the price of the tours or your desire to visit a particular place can therefore be a mistake.

In the Atacama, your body needs time to adapt to the arid conditions and altitude.

The CDC Yellow Book 2026 , an international reference on travel health, identifies gradual ascent as one of the main ways to reduce the risk of health problems. Acclimatization is the key.

This is the approach Atacama Connection uses when recommending the order of your tours. Experiences are arranged by increasing altitude, taking into account physical effort and the time your body needs to adapt, rather than only distance or the cost of each tour.

Therefore, tours at moderate elevations should be enjoyed first, leaving experiences on the Altiplano and in higher areas until later, when your body is better adapted to the environment.

Everyone’s body reacts differently, so there is no competition to “acclimatize faster.”

Another common mistake is to believe that people with better physical fitness are protected from the effects of altitude. This widespread myth does not reflect reality. Whether you are a high-performance athlete, lead a sedentary lifestyle or have an average level of fitness, no one is immune to the effects of altitude.

Learning to recognize, understand and respect your body’s pace is also part of experiencing the Atacama. You travel to discover the desert and, along the way, end up learning more about your own body as well.

5. An oxygen cylinder can help, but it does not replace acclimatization

This is a subject that raises many questions among tourists. The availability of oxygen cylinders does not mean travelers can simply ignore the altitude, nor does it make a rapid ascent safe. It is important to understand the following:

Supplemental oxygen has a legitimate role in specific situations and may be part of a protocol for managing altitude sickness. It would therefore also be incorrect to say that an oxygen cylinder “does not work.”

The real problem is treating an oxygen cylinder as a miracle solution or a substitute for acclimatization. This is a serious mistake that many travelers make because they do not have the right information.

The CDC Yellow Book 2026, cited above, warns that small portable oxygen containers may provide brief relief. The main issue is that small cylinders do not contain enough oxygen to produce sustained improvement.

It is therefore important to understand that a small oxygen cylinder will not resolve the underlying cause of difficulty adapting to altitude. Nor should it be used as a reason to continue ascending when your body is signaling that something is wrong.

The most responsible approach is always prevention: ascend gradually, allow time to adapt, stay well hydrated and pay attention to how your body responds.

It is also extremely important to note that all Atacama Connection guides are trained in first aid. If you experience any kind of discomfort during a tour, tell your guide immediately. The priority will always be to assess the situation properly, rather than simply use supplemental oxygen in an attempt to continue the itinerary at any cost.

Nothing replaces natural, gradual and responsible acclimatization.

And yes, an oxygen cylinder can help in an emergency, but it cannot work miracles. The problem is not using oxygen when it is genuinely necessary. The mistake is believing that a small portable cylinder replaces acclimatization or allows you to continue ascending despite your body’s warning signs.

6. What clothes should you pack for the Atacama?

This is an essential question that can prevent a great deal of discomfort and make your time in the desert much more comfortable. When we think of a desert, we usually picture heat, right? Wrong. Keep in mind that the higher the altitude, the colder it gets. In addition to the cold, altitude makes sun protection even more important. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation tends to increase at high elevations and, combined with intense sunlight and the desert’s dry conditions, makes sunscreen indispensable.

In other words, if in doubt, be prepared to bring a heavy coat, swimwear, sunscreen and moisturizer.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the clothing question because each traveler or group chooses different tours with different goals. However, we can say with confidence that taking clothing for intense cold as well as swimwear for the hot springs is highly recommended.

And no, the light sweatshirt you usually wear on a cool evening will not come close to protecting you from intense cold. We mean a genuinely heavy coat, at least one, to make sure you are prepared.

Thermal base layers are also highly recommended for everyone, regardless of the time of year you choose to visit the Atacama.

We will soon publish a more detailed post devoted entirely to what to pack.

7. I have arrived in San Pedro de Atacama. What now?

Once you have booked flights to the right airport, arranged travel insurance and learned a little about acclimatization and oxygen, it is time to start planning your first days in the desert. And no, they do not need to be a race against the clock.

San Pedro de Atacama is the base for a range of remarkable and very different experiences. Some tours remain at elevations close to the town and are therefore suitable for the first few days. Others gradually climb into the Altiplano and the Andes.

The advice here is to let altitude help determine the order of your tours. The detailed itinerary itself is a subject we will cover in a future blog post. For the purposes of this article, the most important thing is to arrive well, in the right place and, preferably, without setbacks.

8. A good trip begins with a good research

Choosing the wrong airport can disrupt your logistics and schedule. Traveling without health insurance can turn a simple unforeseen event into a financial problem or medical emergency. Ignoring altitude can compromise the very tours that motivated your trip.

As we have seen, however, all these mistakes are preventable.

Experiencing the Atacama safely begins long before you see your first salt flat, volcano or sunset.

It begins with information, planning and respect for the characteristics of one of the most extraordinary environments on the planet.

That is why, for more than two decades, Atacama Connection has helped thousands of travelers from around the world discover the heart and spirit of the desert through logistics designed to provide safety, responsibility and comfort.

This experience is present in every detail, but especially in the way each itinerary is planned: we consider not only the places you want to visit, but also the most appropriate time to experience them.

If you are planning a trip to the Atacama, explore Atacama Connection’s tours and start planning your itinerary right now.

What you need to know before traveling to the Atacama Desert If you are planning a trip to the Atacama Desert, there is one essential detail you need to consider before you even buy your ticket: the correct airport is […]

[1

post-6888","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nao-categorizado
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
