For many travelers, Cerro Toco is the first true experience of high altitude in Atacama.
At 5,604 meters (18,386 ft), it is considered an accessible volcano to summit — as long as it is done with proper preparation, steady pacing, and professional guidance.
We leave San Pedro de Atacama early in the morning and drive to a high starting point at around 5,200 meters (17,060 ft), where the hike begins.
This access significantly reduces elevation gain and allows the experience to be conducted in a safer and more progressive way.
From this point, we begin a hike of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) to the summit, typically completed in about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The pace is steady, with frequent pauses for breathing, hydration, and altitude adaptation.
The terrain is wide and consistently inclined, without technical sections — allowing full focus on rhythm and awareness of your own body.
Throughout the ascent, your guide continuously monitors the group, observing signs of fatigue or discomfort and adjusting the pace whenever needed.
On Cerro Toco, the goal is not to reach the summit quickly — but to reach it well.
Reaching the summit reveals one of the most striking views in Atacama.
Directly ahead rises the Licancabur, the region’s iconic volcano, alongside its “twin,” Juriques.
On clear days, you can also see Laguna Blanca, already in Bolivian territory — reinforcing the vast scale of the Altiplano.
From the top of Cerro Toco, you also gain a privileged view over much of the Atacama Astronomical Park.
It is possible to identify areas where some of the world’s most important observatories are located, such as ALMA, the Simons Observatory, and TAO from the University of Tokyo — a silent reminder of why this is considered one of the best skies on Earth for astronomy.
After time at the summit, we begin the descent at a calm pace, maintaining the same attention to rhythm and safety.
We return to San Pedro de Atacama with the feeling of having reached an important milestone in altitude.
Cerro Toco is not about quick achievement — it is about process.
A conscious step toward the vast landscapes of the Altiplano — and toward a new relationship with altitude.
