The Lascar Volcano is one of the most intense adventure experiences in Atacama.
Not only because of the altitude, but because of the terrain, the environment, and the awareness of standing before an active volcano — in a place where nature sets the pace.
We leave San Pedro de Atacama around 5:00 AM, still in the dark, traveling in 4×4 vehicles toward the Altiplano.
Sunrise takes place in one of the most striking settings in the desert: Laguna Lejía.
Here, we stop for breakfast. As the sun rises, the light touches the surrounding volcanoes and reflects on the water — a moment of calm before the challenge.
After breakfast, we continue by vehicle to approximately 5,000 meters (16,400 ft), where the hike begins.
From there, we start trekking across volcanic terrain: loose ground, steady incline, and an increasingly austere environment.
The hike covers about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) to the crater rim, at 5,592 meters (18,346 ft), and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes.
The pace is controlled, with frequent stops for breathing, hydration, and continuous group assessment.
Your guide follows every step, observing physical signs and adjusting the pace according to the conditions of the day and the group.
On Lascar, more than on any other experience, decision-making is part of the journey.
Continuing or turning back is not failure — it is part of the process.
Reaching the crater rim is a powerful moment.
Steam vents, the smell of sulfur, and visible activity reveal the geological forces still shaping Atacama.
From the top, the view opens across the Andean Altiplano: volcanoes, plains, and salt flats stretching to the horizon.
It is a harsh, vast, and deeply impactful landscape.
After time for rest and contemplation, we begin the descent with the same level of care and attention.
The terrain requires control, and the body already feels the effort of the climb.
We continue respecting the group’s pace until returning to San Pedro de Atacama.
The Lascar Volcano is not only about altitude.
It is a physical and mental challenge — and its greatest reward lies in the awareness of having lived something intense, real, and deeply memorable: climbing an active volcano in Atacama.
