This tour is an invitation to understand the Andean Altiplano at its core.

A vast, silent and powerful territory, where the landscape changes color, life adapts to extreme conditions and time seems to follow a different rhythm. This full-day tour departs in the morning and returns in the late afternoon, with breakfast and lunch served along the way.
We leave San Pedro de Atacama and travel south, leaving the oasis behind as we cross the vast desert landscapes. Gradually, the scenery begins to change: salt flats, open plains and volcanoes announce our arrival in one of the most impressive environments in northern Chile.
Our first immersion takes place in the heart of the Salar de Atacama, where the immense white salt flat meets shallow lagoons that support a surprising diversity of life.
At Laguna Chaxa, we walk among salt formations as the first colors of the day reflect across the Andes. In the middle of a seemingly inhospitable landscape, flamingos feed peacefully in the lagoon’s waters, creating one of the Atacama Desert’s most iconic scenes.
Depending on the time of year and natural conditions, you may see different species of flamingos, as well as other birds that inhabit this delicate ecosystem. Your guide explains how these animals live and find food in an environment shaped by salinity, altitude and significant temperature variations.
It is an encounter that changes the way you see the desert. After all, life here does not merely survive: it finds extraordinary ways to exist.
We leave the Salar de Atacama and begin climbing towards the vast high-altitude landscapes. Along the way, wildlife continues to appear in unexpected places. Vicuñas, foxes and Andean birds are commonly seen. With a little luck, you may also spot rheas, guanacos and birds of prey, turning the journey into a true Altiplano safari.
The ascent is gradual. Before reaching the highest altitudes of the tour, we stop for breakfast and visit the Tropic of Capricorn marker, an invisible line that helps explain the desert. Within this band around the planet, dry air and high-pressure systems inhibit the formation of clouds and rain, creating the conditions behind arid landscapes such as the Atacama Desert.
This is also where the Inca Trail, the Qhapaq Ñan, crosses the desert, reminding us that ancient civilizations already traveled through this territory and considered it sacred. Here, we share a true and remarkable story.
More than 500 years ago, three children left Cusco on a long ritual pilgrimage to the summit of Llullaillaco volcano.
At an altitude of more than 6,700 meters, they were offered to the gods as part of a ceremony known as Capacocha. Their mummies were found in 1999 and are now preserved at the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology, known as MAAM, in Salta, Argentina.
We then continue towards Socaire, the gateway to some of the tour’s most remarkable landscapes.
The Salar de Aguas Calientes reveals one of the Atacama Desert’s most striking contrasts. This is where we find the famous Piedras Rojas, formed through the oxidation of iron-rich minerals over thousands of years. The intensely red ground contrasts with the blue-green waters and the volcanoes in the distance, creating one of the desert’s most dramatic landscapes.
At this point, the invitation is simple: be present.
Walk slowly, observe in silence and feel the power of the place, one of the Andean Altiplano’s most profound expressions.
We then continue to the Miscanti and Miñiques Altiplanic Lagoons, named after the volcanoes that surround them.
The deep blue water contrasts with the white mountains, the ochre ground and the clear desert sky. The walk is gentle and contemplative. On clear days, you may see Andean birds while your guide explains how these lagoons were formed through volcanic processes and melting snow from the mountains.
In Socaire, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the Salar de Atacama. The menu includes a starter and a main course and can be adapted for specific dietary requirements when requested in advance. On the return journey, the desert changes once again.
The colors soften, the air becomes denser and your body notices the difference in altitude. What remains is the feeling of having experienced one of the region’s most complete tours, not only because of the diversity of landscapes, but also because you cross several different ecosystems in a single day.
From the flamingos of Laguna Chaxa to the red formations of Piedras Rojas. From the immensity of the Salar de Atacama to the deep blue of the Altiplanic Lagoons. Throughout the journey, we guide this crossing at a considered pace, with pauses and choices that exist not only on the map, but also in the way the desert is experienced.
If you are looking for more than simply visiting tourist attractions and want to understand the Altiplano at its core, this is the tour that makes that difference clear.
